IIn this paper a novel technique is proposed to characterize the elasto-plastic properties of materials from sharp indentation test. By finite element modeling, the indentation test response is obtained for a wide range of elasto-plastic properties. Finite element results are utilized to train a multi-layer perceptron artificial neural network which predicts indentation test response from elasto-plastic properties. Finally a new optimization algorithm inspired from historical imperialist competition called “Imperialist Competitive Algorithm” is employed for material properties evaluation from indentation test curve. Results obtained from applying the proposed method to a variety of sharp indentation test responses, show the capability of the proposed method for interpreting the indentation test responses and material properties determination
